ABSTRACT

The research presented in this text is based on multifarious methodology that uses different registers for data collection: bibliography consultation, case studies, interviews and queries to experts in the subjects of the research, field visits, case analysis, debate of themes and results with experts in the field. The bibliographic research focused chiefly on two major points: the conservation of earthen architecture in the United States, the main subject of this text, and earthen architecture as such in the United States. Examining earthen architecture in the United States permitted us to understand fully the cases of conservation and restoration that we found, since both familiarity with the construction techniques of earthen architecture and the cultural and constructive context provide the grounds for its conservation. Thanks to the broad view in the bibliography, we chose the most interesting cases to make an in-depth study of earthen architecture in US territory and the most important and representative cases to analyse the criteria and techniques used in conserving these structures.
