ABSTRACT
Rock fall events at a cutting face during mountain tunnel excavation cause 1 or 2 fatalities per a year in Japan. Rock falls happen when workers set up blasts at the face and mount the steel arch support at the lateral side of the face. The mountain tunnels are usually excavated using blasting and blasts may be prior to the stress relaxation around the tunnel face.
