ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: In this study, the effect of the denitrification could be improved significantly using suspended-carrier biofilm technology in the traditional SBR. Influence of the DO, pH, C/N, pre-anaerobic phase and the characteristics in sedimentation stage of SBBR system were researched. The results show that additions of suspended-carrier played an important role in the nitrogen removal. DO is a key factor to achieve SND and should be controlled to meet the needs of aerobic bacteria (aerobic heterotrophic bacteria and nitrobacteria) without destroying the anaerobic micro-environment in the biofilm. A concentration of 3.3 mg/L DO is recommended in this study. The quantity and quality of dissolved organic matter as supplementary carbon source for denitrification impacts the biological nitrogen removal in the pre-anaerobic stage.
