ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT: For residential buildings, the higher buildings are, the larger distance between buildings will be, while nobody is willing to stay, because it is just empty space without design. The physical structure of the space between the traditional courtyard houses in Beijing is studied. In order to recover this physical structure, soft boundaries and faculties should be meticulously designed and established to attract more people to utilize the space, which would not only improve the communications between neighours but also the surveillance for the security of residential area. Furthermore, the policy which could bring people working together to live together is also expected to encourage the cohesion in residential community.
