ABSTRACT: Operational risks during the construction period and first impoundment time of gravity dams are the dam engineering industry’s primary concern. In this paper, taking the typical section of a gravity dam as an example, a 3D model of a dam and foundation was built. Through the finite element method, the static characteristics of the dam, dam foundation and weak intercalations during completion, and the working conditions of a normal storage level were analyzed. Also, the characteristics of the dam deformation and stress distribution, the change processes, and the corresponding structural weaknesses under two kinds of working conditions were summarized. All this can provide a reference to ensure the safe operation of engineering, and reduce the risks associated with it.
