ABSTRACT

There are several traditional methods mainly including visual observation, coin-tap, and ultrasonic nondestructive test (NDT) for detecting the interface defects of steel-bonded RC structures. Visual observation method is used to speculate the bonding quality by observing the structural adhesive overflow from the air vents. Then coin-tap method is used by knocking the outside surface of bonded steel plate to determine the bond quality. The crisp sound means it is dense and dull sound means that there are some hollows. These two methods need experienced examiners and can not give exact positions and degrees of bond defects. The ultrasonic method is not imprecise for the defects size. So these three methods can not reflect the defects position, size completely for detecting the qualities of interface defects of steel-bonded RC structures.
