ABSTRACT
Kawai et al. (2003) conducted static compaction tests with monitoring suction change (Fig. 1). Suction decreased with loading process while suction increased with unloading process. In their study, these behaviors were explained by unsaturated soil mechanics. However, the reason why the compaction curve shows the maximum dry density at the optimum water content was not explained.
