ABSTRACT
Transportation is the foundation of the national economic development and the prerequisite of normal operation and harmonious development of each link such as social production, circulation, distribution, and consumption. By the end of 2007, the total mileage of highway in Chongqing exceeded 100,000 km, that of expressway open to traffic exceeded 1,000 km, that of rural highway construction exceeded 90,000 km, and that of trunk highway exceeded 6,000 km. By the end of 2011, the length of urban expressway opened to traffic reached 2,000 km, forming the framework of “Two Rings, Eight Branch Lines” expressway. During the period of the “12th Five-Year Plan,” Chongqing has increased the length of expressway of 1,000 km, striving to be 3,000 km. There are 20 provincial external channels, basically forming the framework of “Three Rings, Ten Branch Lines and Three Connections” expressway and covering all counties (autonomous counties) of the whole city, to basically achieve 1 km expressway per 10,000 people.
