ABSTRACT: With the rapid development of cloud computing, virtualization technology becomes more and more popular. It improves the utilization of software and hardware resources, and saves a lot of IT costs. However, virtualization also brings overheads, i.e. physical resource consumption because of workload mapping from virtual to physical. It is very important to consider the overhead when planning the cloud capacity. This paper proposes a regression-based model to measuring the relationship between virtualization overhead and network I/O & disk I/O since the network I/O and disk I/O are the main factors that affect the virtualization overhead. The package rates and block read/write rates of virtual machines were used in the model. The model is validated by plenty of benchmark experiments.
