ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The computational fluid dynamics method, based on solving the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations, was used to simulate the flow field around a ship navigating in the shallow water area with fluid mud layer. The rheological behaviour of fluid mud was characterized by the Bingham plastic model. The water-mud interface was captured using the volume of fluid method. Benchmarking test of the KVLCC2 tanker advancing in the deep and shallow water was conducted. The computed resistance was validated against experimental data. To investigate the effect of fluid mud on the ship resistance, the tanker advancing with different under keel clearance in the muddy area were simulated. The ship resistance and undulation of water-mud interface in different navigation conditions were compared. The resistance characteristic is briefly discussed.
