ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: With respect to general consensus of significant effects of seepage flow on slope erosion and few published experimental results or mature theory to explain the erosion mechanism quantitatively, quantitative experimental studies were initiated by new proposed apparatus in this paper. The model tests based on new experimental techniques of proposed apparatus, were conducted to represent the scouring process of slope soil detachment by shallow flow, revealing the coupling mechanism of seepage on slope erosion. According to the experimental analysis by different combinations of surface flow and seepage flow, performance of the proposed apparatus was confirmed, and the seepage coupling effects on slope erosion were quantified in detail. The results can be introduced into the theories of slope erosion to consider the coupling effect of upward seepage on slope soil detachment, and be applied in the design of erosion protection.
