2 NODE GEOGRAPHY, MEMBERSHIP AND MODE OF OPERATION

The Oceania node of GlobalSoilMap.net covers the island nations of the Pacific (currently defined as island members of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community), New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Indonesia. It covers a land area of approximately 10.4 million km2 and has a population of around 280 million. It includes an extraordinary range of biophysical, economic and demographic characteristics. Some of the smallest nations of the world are adjacent to some of the largest, economic wealth and growth rates

1 INTRODUCTION

The Oceania Node of GlobalSoilMap includes the island nations of the Pacific, the nations of the Indonesian archipelago, New Zealand, Australia and parts of Antarctica. It was formally launched on Feb 7th 2011 in Bogor, Indonesia. Prior to this, the Node was developed during 2010-2011 through a process of workshops and engagement to build involvement in the node, explore approaches in pilot projects, develop an understanding of the information management challenges, develop and deliver training programs and propose a set of principles for the Node’s operation.
