ABSTRACT

The chapter is composed of two distinct parts. The first is an attempt to simulate the expansion of a reactive mortar bar through the diffusion of ions and gel. Diffusion is simulated by finite difference, and expansion through finite element. In the process, an attempt is made to correlate the resulting time dependent expansion with the sigmoidal curve of Larive. The second part is again a timid attempt to develop a mathematical model for the kinetics of the AAR. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this has never been attempted before.
