ABSTRACT

Because of the increasing energy prices and efforts for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, it has become significant to improve the energy efficiency, replace the existing energy intensive operations with new energy efficient ones, and increase the use of renewable energy in the agricultural and food industry (Wang, 2008). The improvement of energy efficiency in the agricultural and food industry should not only be considered to provide economic benefit but also provide benefits for environmental protection, social sustainability, energy supply security and industrial competitiveness. This chapter started with the examination of the energy use in the agricultural production and food processing facilities. The energy-saving opportunities were then identified and energy conservation measures were discussed.
