Introduction

Hydropower has been exploited for at least 2000 years. Both the Greeks and the Romans used water wheels andwindmills for irrigation and flour milling. Never before had there been an alternative to motive power provided by humans or animals. Until the advent of the steam engine, small hydropower in the form of water mills was a major source of motive power all over the world.
