ABSTRACT

To answer the aforementioned question, this investigation considered the responses from a survey completed by senior structural engineering professionals. Based on the survey we notice that the apathy toward using steel girders in bridge construction are that; steel girders as too expensive, the high cost of maintenance, concrete girders have become the norm and the aesthetic appeal of the concrete girders. The latter two factors are based on the designer’s and/or client’s appreciation and not on economic considerations. The first two factors need to be investigated to have a sound economic base. The authors believe that these factors are solely based on past experience and not on a cost analysis per project.
