ABSTRACT

When designing high-rise building structures in regions of high seismicity, engineers find they have to contend with stringent code requirements that typically limit them to the use of only a few conventional lateral systems. This limits innovation and often results in dull, “boxy” structures. Several examples of highrise design solutions that were born of the interaction between programmatic, aesthetic and building system needs are selected from recent work in areas of moderate and high seismicity in China.
