ABSTRACT

On a qualitative level, the importance of the inclusion of the additional lateral support system, and especially the pile wall, was illustrated by this analysis. The LE analysis showed that the tied back pile wall forced the critical failure surface to lie behind the anchor and under the pile wall. This effect greatly reduced the likelihood of failure. Furthermore, the non-circular shear failure analysis showed that the critical failure surface lay through the ground anchor, suggesting that a failure of the ground anchor was more likely than an overall failure of the lateral support.This path fell in a large portion of the weaker re-worked residual Malmesbury material. These LE results were superimposed onto the FEM SSR results, as shown by red and orange-dashed lines, respectively, in figure 1.
