ABSTRACT
The suitability of a dam site depends not only on the embankment but also on the ability of the soils in the storage area to hold water. The soil profile should contain a layer of material that is sufficiently impervious and thick enough to prevent seepage losses. Excellent materials for this purpose are clays and silty clays, although sandy clays are usually satisfactory.
