ABSTRACT

Due to the diluting effect, much lower concentrations of organics are to be expected in seawater. This is borne out by comparing the total haloform content of river water (up to 13.4µg l−1) with that in seawater (0.119µg l−1, Table 11.1). An exception is, of course, the naturally occurring amino acids found in seawater where concentrations for total combined amino acids of up to 1350µg l−1 have been found in the North Sea and up to 120µg l−1 in the open ocean.
