ABSTRACT

The processes described in Chapter 4, infiltration, storage and evaporation, are not generally destructive, although they can cause damage when considered in conjunction with foundations on expansive clays or collapsible soils. The topics dealt with in this chapter are, however, definitely destructive. The geotechnical engineer is mainly concerned with the effects of water and wind erosion on cut slopes and embankments, and with the nuisance of wind-blown dust. There is a particular concern with the slopes of tailings dams, especially those constructed near human settlements and agricultural land, where fugitive dust can cause health problems and degrade the value of crops.
