The apparatus for blade abrasion test is shown in Figure 1, following the design originally developed by Champ et al. (1974). It consisted of seven main parts. The blade was fixed at one end of a freely pivoted arm which has a simple dashpot damper at the other end. The damper was used to reduce the

1 INTRODUCTION

Rubber materials have been used in a wide range of engineering applications. Abrasion takes place in many components, especially in tyres, belts, printing rolls and shoe soles. Abrasion is a complicated phenomenon, which consists of mechanical, thermal and chemical processes (Moore, 1972). In the last fifty years, a large amount of work has been done to investigate the mechanism of elastomer abrasion. However, the exact mechanism is still not clear.
