ABSTRACT

It has been made clear in the scientific and popular press that the average age of the

population in developed countries is increasing. The number of older adults is increasing

faster than that of their younger counterparts. Rowe and Kahn (1998) emphasized the

dramatic increase in life expectancy by pointing to an estimate showing that of all the

humans who have ever lived to the age of 65 years or older, half are currently alive today.
