ABSTRACT

The chapter goes on to discuss implications of our findings in the con text of CSCW for the design of agents for multicultural situations. We sug gest several avenues for reflection on the themes of the book: (a) what cul tural considerations enter into interaction, personality, visual design, and context of embodied agents; (b) how agents might reflect and represent the social and cultural systems from which they come; and (c) the crosscultural portability of embodied agents. Finally, we propose an A-B-X sys tem as a formalization of a way to look at the relationship among agents (both human and artificial), the material context in which they evolve, and the ongoing construction of social context. Before moving into the body of the chapter, however, some background is in order.
