ABSTRACT

The following chapter refl ects upon a range of issues concerning assessment that have been highlighted by staff working with children with autism at the Helen Allison School (National Autistic Society – NAS). It has been well documented (e.g. Jordan and Powell, 1995) that there are diffi culties in the area of assessment for pupils with autism. We have attempted to show here how an awareness of these general diffi culties has informed our practice at the school and we have illustrated specifi c issues from our own observations. A central theme of this is the way in which children are encouraged to refl ect on their own performance and develop their own self-assessment skills.
