ABSTRACT
The United Kingdom is composed of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each country has its own unique local traditions and its own educational system (at the primary and secondary levels). Although there are some distinctive differences in school education in the three countries, the provision of university education has not been differentiated. Until 1990, conditions for universities throughout the United Kingdom were determined by the University Grants Committee (though it had only an indirect influence in Northern Ireland).
