ABSTRACT
A number is written as a sequence of digits which are collectively referred to as a word. Symbols, called numerals, must be decided upon to represent each distinct digit value from zero to a maximum which is one less than the base. The arable system, using base ten, is the one with which we are all familiar. Digits increase in significance from right to left, representing increasing powers of the base.
