ABSTRACT
The economic approach to understanding social and political organization should be based on the same economic principles that are used to explain economic organization. The key concept is transaction costs. Transaction costs determine the choice between the firm and the market and influence the internal organization of the firm. Similarly, transaction costs explain how political institutions are organized.
