ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an introduction to health inequalities by examining the various definitions of health inequalities, documenting and explaining the research evidence on the state of health inequalities in the late 1990s, and by reviewing the ways in which the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is responding to them. The chapter also makes some conclusions about the likely success of current strategies for reducing inequalities.
