ABSTRACT
This chapter examines how the changing industrial architecture of Europe manifests itself in the electricity supply industries (ESIs) of central Europe, and focuses in particular on the interplay between policy integration and production integration.The interaction between these two dimensions of integration has been more apparent here than in other sectors examined in this book, not least because of the very significant changes that are taking place in the sector itself.While the central and east European (CEE) economies have undergone dramatic reforms of ownership, market structure, and trade and investment, the transformation has been particularly acute in the utility industries such as electricity supply. Moreover, the nature of the changes taking place has been focused as much on governments as on firms, with policy and regulation (at both national and European Union (EU) levels) having a higher profile than in other sectors.
