ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 concludes Part II. As with Chapter 3, this chapter looks at the practical manifestations of adopting particular representations of the region – namely, the ‘Arab Regional System’, ‘Euro-Med Region’, ‘Muslim Middle East’, and ‘(New) Middle East’ – which are rooted in different conceptions of security. The aim here is not to cover the complete range of security practices, but rather focus on those practices that were adopted to address the problem of regional security. The overall purpose of the chapter is to show how spatial representations help to shape practice; how they enable some practices whilst marginalising others; how they address some insecurities while constituting others.
