ABSTRACT

Xu Yi was a young manager of a state-owned publishing house. When he was promoted to be the general manager in 1999, he started to introduce various incentive schemes in order to motivate staff members. This managed to upset some of the less productive employees who were paid less under these schemes. These employees complained to Xu’s superior in the parent company. Xu’s boss, however, supported him and encouraged him to try out more methods to revitalise the company.
