ABSTRACT
To the Western ear, the term Manchuria conjures romantic images of a remote isolated land inhabited by fierce nomadic warriors. Since early times, it is believed, these simple people living north of the Great Wall, and operating under the Manchu Banner system of government, roamed the vast plains of the region in search of food and plunder. But life for the nomads was more than loot and pillage.
