Moreover: the basis they laid for a useful and well integrated body of analytical tools and propositions were sounder than much of the subsequent work, in the sense that a considerable part of economics of the later nineteenth century might have been developed from those bases more quickly and with less effort than it actually cost to develop it, and that some of the work between those two periods has had something of a labour and time consuming detour.
