ABSTRACT

The DHL services and customs Few companies have better knowledge of customs rules and procedures, 'red tape' and other mis-functionings in customs controls than international courier companies. This case presents DHL's account of difficulties in serving its clients across customs borders with special emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe. Among problems encountered by trading firms, inefficiencies and irregularities in functioning of customs far outweigh other hindrances to trade (such as currency fluctuations or tariffs), and unhelpful, old-fashioned and ill-managed customs signify increasingly high costs in a trading environment where just-in-time supplies, electronic trading and globalization are gaining grounds.
