ABSTRACT

The identification of explosives is an important aspect of many police investigations. Circumstances range from possession of explosive substances through pranks and experimentation to terrorist bombings. The analytical results may dictate the direction of an investigation-was the explosion intentionally caused or accidental; if intentional, was it a ‘criminal’ act or a political/terrorist act; is there a link to earlier occurrences; is there sufficient evidence to lay charges?
