ABSTRACT

For many teachers, the planning of musical experiences for children in the classroom may have connections with the outside world, particularly in terms of inclusion of children’s musical preferences. However, such musical experiences tend to exist, quite understandably, within the confines of the classroom and so may not take children’s own music making into account. Outside the classroom, even within other areas of the school such as the playground, children are engaging in richly challenging musical activities of their own devising. In this chapter, some of the characteristics of children’s musical play will be explored with the purpose of enabling teachers to incorporate some of these characteristics into class activities.
