ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses in particular on the theme of teaching for creativity through making connections within musical practices themselves, and across school subjects, working with the unexpected and the familiar to generate new knowledge and understanding. Integration provides a way of connecting, deepening and consolidating learning across the curriculum and can maximise the available time for creative music making. Teachers often feel that there is ‘not enough time’ to integrate meaningfully – and indeed, research suggests that curriculum overload is a reality in many countries at primary level, 1 – but as Parsons (2004) affirms, an integrated curriculum is not simply about timetables and the length of the school day, but about creating meaning and understanding through learning.
