ABSTRACT

Although of secondary importance to the ultimate outcome of the Manchurian campaign, the 2d Far Eastern Front’s operations contributed significantly to the Far East Command’s success and, coincidently, left the legacy of a massive amount of military experience regarding how to conduct military operations in challenging terrain conditions. The front’s forces conducted extremely complex military operations across an extremely broad front, often in concert with naval forces, and, while doing so, mastered some of the most difficult terrain in Manchuria. In addition, some of the heaviest and most costly fighting during the entire campaign occurred during the 2d Far Eastern Front’s operations, in particular, when Japanese forces from the 134th and 123d Infantry Divisions and the 135th Independent Mixed Brigade resisted these secondary Soviet efforts (see Maps 60 and 61).
