ABSTRACT

Acquired brain injury (ABI) is one of the leading causes of neurological impairment in the U.S. and accounts for over 1 million visits to the emergency room each year (Centers for Disease Control, 1999; Kraus et al., 1984). ABI is the leading cause of neurological impairment for individuals between the ages of 16 and 30 years of age. Acquired brain injury technically includes brain damage as a result of cerebrovascular disease (or stroke), but for the purposes of this chapter, the focus will predominately be on brain injury of traumatic etiology.
