ABSTRACT

When doing this, it needs to be remembered that the general range of consumption goods was far smaller and the products unsophisticated compared to those of today, so that the expectation is of a narrower range of industries with simpler production processes. Furthermore, prevalent technologies still often relied overwhelmingly on workers using hand-tools or relatively simple labour-assisted machinery. Most of the making up of cotton, iron and other products of the industrial revolution into useful goods was done by handicraft workers in the clothing, iron-working and other industries. This labour intensity of production increased the attractiveness of cities with their pools of labour and, therefore, it is to be expected that labour-intensive production processes would be over-represented in city activities.
