ABSTRACT

Primary MFL started out as an experiment initiated by teachers who, quite some time ago, saw benefits in early foreign language learning and we give credit to those enthusiasts who laid the foundations for children to have an enjoyable learning experience in today’s tightly packed curriculum. In recent years, we have seen a series of burgeoning primary school early foreign language learning experiences and initiatives across the nation, albeit unevenly spread. Government initiatives, a plethora of official frameworks for learning and teaching and targeted funding for primary MFL, all resulted in a seriously high profile for the whole enterprise. This is nothing short of a paradigmatic change in attitude on the part of leaders and, indeed, other stakeholders – a change reflected in the place afforded foreign language learning in the curriculum provision of many primary schools for all children.
