ABSTRACT

Boyd (2001) challenges the assumption that people-centred management automatically leads to first-class health and safety management, using the case of airlines, where standard EU and UK health and safety legislation does not apply. Sanctimonious HRM mission statements belie cost-minimization and productivity maximizing strategies. These have a derogative effect on health and safety standards by creating a worse working environment, more stressful work and more intensive work patterns, as Case study 4.8 illustrates.
