ABSTRACT

From WERS the state of trade membership can be ascertained in two main ways, by measuring union density and by measuring the percentage of workplaces where there are or have been trade union members in the recent past. The HI continues to sustain significantly lower trade union density in comparison with AIS and the PSS (Table 6.2). Although the picture is slightly more encouraging in larger workplaces, trade union incursion into the heart of the HI is, at best, highly marginal (Table 6.3). Recent LFS (2001) figures indicate that 5 per cent of HI employees are union members (8 per cent full-time and 3 per cent part-time), and the figure drops to 4 per cent if public sector workplaces are excluded (Brook, 2002).
