ABSTRACT

Tatars account for 12 per cent of the Crimean population (FT, Survey, 5 May 1998, p. iii).

Russians make up about two-thirds of the peninsula’s 2.7 million people, whereas the Tatars number less than a tenth … Tatars … want their language [close to Turkish], which is barely taught in schools, preserved and the property that was confiscated after their deportation [on 18 May 1944 to Central Asia] given back. So far, none has been. Lastly, with two-thirds of their people unemployed, they want jobs.
