ABSTRACT

Carpe Vitam (seize life) is the name of the Stockholm-based organization that sponsored a programme and set of principles which would travel globally – a reminder of how we are divided not only by differing linguistic conventions but also by a common language. The second half of this chapter tells the story of an equally far-travelled project, involving 101 schools in twenty-one countries, in which school students played a central role, none more so than Serena, who was to become the heroine of a book, in German translation bearing the title Serena, or: how people can change their school. This chapter opens with the legacy of fascism and closes with a historic reminder of its devastating impact.
