ABSTRACT

Contrary to the situation in other countries 1 and as partially highlighted by the present Jewish assets affair, researchers have previously taken no real interest in the memory of the Second World War in Switzerland. Should this be seen as a historical lacuna, engendered by the spirit of 'spiritual defence' 2 which for so long impregnated the intellectual climate of Switzerland, or evidence that a study of this subject is unnecessary as far as Switzerland is concerned? I will not dwell on the lack of progress by Swiss historians which is apparent in certain areas, one example being the history of the period under discussion. On the other hand, our interpretation of the term 'memory' must be clarified, together with the specific aspects of these problems in connection with Switzerland.
