ABSTRACT

AFTER LEAVING EDGARTOWN IN NOVEMBER I837, THE AURORA sailed in company with another Nantucket whaler, the Phoenix (possibly because Captain John Hussey's relative, Isaac B. Hussey, was in command of her), to the Cape Verde Islands, where the Aurora took on fresh provisions before sailing south and tackling the tough westward route round Cape Horn to the Pacific coasts of South America. Finally, in April 1838, they dropped anchor in Paita, Peru, where the men were given liberty-days off-to go on shore. It was the first of many similar visits.
