Popular Cul ture Stud ies is in some ways a stepchild, or break-off, of Amer i can Stud ies. Pioneer Amer i can Stud ies, usu ally com bin ing literature and his tory, ap peared in the 1930s, but the ma jor expansion both in the United States and worldwide fol lowed World War II.
