ABSTRACT

People from other countries and other cultures have been arriving in Britain for many years. Some children entering school now will be from families who have been here for more than one generation. Others will be more recent arrivals. Asylum seekers are currently entering the country in some numbers. Many schools will now have substantial numbers of children of other cultures in every class. While those coming from families who have been settled here for some years will probably speak fluent English, others may have only a smattering of the language and this poses problems for teachers.
